You Should Be Wearing Sunscreen Every Day—And You’ll Actually *Want* To Use These (2024)

The best sunscreens are the ones that you apply every day. Yes, you heard right: Every. Single. Day. "Even the low levels of UV light that you'd be exposed to from going for a walk or having lunch outdoors can add up over a lifetime," says board-certified dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, MD, director of cosmetic and clinical research in the department of dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. Add up to what, you ask? Think fine lines, sagging skin, and hyperpigmenation (not to mention an increased risk of developing skin cancer—especially if you regularly exercise outside).

For that reason, it makes a lot of sense to combine the steps of your skincare routine by using a moisturizer for your skin type that also has SPF in it. Zeichner is quick to point out that moisturizers with SPF tend to be more "cosmetically elegant" than the sunscreen you'd slather on at the beach, meaning you're more likely to find one that suits your skin's unique needs and, therefore, use it often. A total win-win.

Best Moisturizers With SPF

What to consider

So how can you find the best product for your complexion? There are a few things to think about when it comes to adding a moisturizer with SPF into your routine, like whether it has a mineral or chemical UV filters, and what the ingredients, format, and SPF number are. Here's the gist:

Mineral or chemical SPF

Dermatologist and Women's Health advisory board member Mona Gohara, MD, prefers mineral (sometimes called "physical") sunscreens over chemical sunscreens because they work for all skin types (even acne-prone and sensitive skin), aren't as irritating because they sit on top of the skin, and create a physical barrier between your skin and the sun's damaging rays. Mineral sunscreens typically contain particles of zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, or a mixture of both to reflect the sun's rays off the skin. The only downside is that some of these formulas can leave a white cast. On the flip side, chemical sunscreens absorb into the skin and contain organic filters such as oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, and octinoxate. Many people opt for these because they're more lightweight and sheer. However, they're more likely to cause irritation in sensitive skin types than their mineral cousins.

Ingredients

In addition the actual sunscreen filers found in chemical and mineral sunscreens, there are some other ones to look for that go beyond sun protection. "Moisturizers with SPF are often formulated with additional specialized ingredients for different skin needs—just like regular moisturizers," says Dr. Zeichner. You may find niacinamide to tackle redness, vitamin C to brighten, or ceramides and hyaluronic acid, which can improve moisture retention and strengthen the skin barrier.

Formula

Overall, you want to choose a formula that you'll enjoy wearing. So maybe a serum or gel is your jam if you have oily skin or prefer lightweight products. If you have dry or sensitive skin, opt for a richer cream formula.

SPF number

Aside from the ingredients, the next-most important thing is to choose a broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher so that the face is protected from all of the sun's rays, says Dr. Gohara.

How we selected

Women’s Health editors, including assistant love and life editor Addison Aloian, and editorial assistant Sabrina Talbert consulted two top dermatologists for their recommendations. We then put their picks to the test with the help of the rest of Team WH and an anonymous group of testers with various skin types and tones to narrow down the best 15 moisturizers with SPF for a wide range of skincare needs and preferences.

SPF30
Key IngredientsCeramide-3, niacinamide, glycerin, thermal water
TypeChemical
Skin TypeDry, combination, sensitive

Have acne-prone skin? Then this moisturizer is for you. "This moisturizer contains soothing thermal spring water to help calm the skin and maintain a healthy microbiome," with its prebiotic blend of ingredients, says Dr. Zeichner. Plus, it has ceramide-3 that mimics skin lipids to support the skin barrier and niacinimide to treat discoloration. It's also free of fragrance, oils, and it won't clog pores.

WH beauty director Brian Underwood describes this as the perfect two-for-one due since it hydrates skin while providing extra protection from the sun. "You're supposed to reapply sunscreen every two hours, but I never do because I often find that slathering on layer after layer of a formula makes my skin feel greasy or heavy," he says. "Not with this one, which glides on and leaves behind the perfect velvet-y finish—not too dewy, not too matte."

This moisturizer is on the thicker side and is recommended for those with dry and combination skin. That said, this formula may be too thick for those who are prone to oiliness. And thought this is a chemical sunscreen, it's been formulated to be gentle on even the most senstive skin (just do a patch test before you apply all over).

Best For Acne Prone Skin

CeraVe Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30

  • You Should Be Wearing Sunscreen Every Day—And You’ll Actually *Want* To Use These (18)May leave a white cast on some skin tones
SPF30
Key IngredientsCeramides, Niacinamide

This hydrating sunscreen contains ceramides and niacinamide that nourish your skin without making it feel greasy. The mineral SPF ingredients (it contains both titanium dioxide and zinc oxide) are better if you're prone to an oily T-zone or acne compared to what you'd get from a chemical sunscreen."It provides broad spectrum UV protection in a formula that contains ceramide to keep the skin barrier strong," Dr. Zeichner says.

For Underwood, this CeraVe moisturizer is a go-to. "I have an oily T-zone, and I love that this one feels hydrating but doesn't leave my skin greasy the way some others do," he says. "It also really stands up to the elements—I wore it outside during the recent New York City heatwave, and while it's not water or sweat-resistant, I felt like it really stayed on and got the job done." He adds that he has pretty fair skin, so while the formula worked well for his skin tone, he says it may leave a whitish cast on olive to deep-toned skin and may require some time to blend in.

SPF30
Key IngredientsVitamin C, Niacinamide

Whether you're new to adding SPF to your skincare routine or you're a veteran looking to cut your skincare steps down, this moisturizer makes protecting your skin simple. The creamy texture is super lightweight and doesn't leave a greasy feeling behind.

"This moisturizer uses mineral protection against UV light along with a blend of antioxidants to neutralize free radical damage," says Dr. Zeichner. "Niacinamide and vitamin C also help to brighten the complexion and reduce redness." Although it's a mineral-based formula, there is no white cast, which creates a smooth canvas for makeup application. It also absorbs quickly into the skin and doesn't pill, so your makeup will stay in place all day long. On the flipside, some testers did feel that this wasn't the best choice for mature skin as it seemed to settle into fine lines.

"My skin tends to be dryer in the morning and after showering, so I really like this sunscreen because it's a little on the oilier side," says WH commerce editor Jasmine Gomez. "It gave me a boost of hydration with no extra moisturizer necessary—my skin was glowing."

Best For Easy Reapplication

Pixi Skintreats SunMist SPF 50

You Should Be Wearing Sunscreen Every Day—And You’ll Actually *Want* To Use These (25)

Pros

Cons
  • You Should Be Wearing Sunscreen Every Day—And You’ll Actually *Want* To Use These (28)Not ideal to be worn under makeup
SPF50
Key IngredientsChamomile Extract, Aloe
TypeChemical
Skin TypeAll

For an easy sunscreen refresh midday, try this sun mist from Pixi. "This broad spectrum spray sunscreen delivers chamomile extract and aloe for soothing and antioxidant benefits," Dr. Zeichner says. Not only does it provide your skin with a much needed SPF 50 boost, it also contains ingredients to calm and condition your skin. It's the perfect afternoon moisture and sunscreen mist.

WH associate commerce editor Lily Wohlner says it's the perfect product for a beach day when you don't want to constantly rub on lotion. "There are plenty of hydrating ingredients like aloe vera, vitamin E, and avocado oil, which soothes my skin after (and during) a long day in the sun," she says. Wohlner adds that the spray easily sits on top of makeup and doesn't cause creasing or an oiliness.

On the flipside, mists may not give you the best coverage, so you'll want to start your day with a cream or lotion and use this for touch-ups. And if you plan on being outdoors or active, this isn't the ideal pick.

Best Tinted Moisturizer With SPF

Saie Slip Tint Broad Spectrum SPF 35 Sunscreen Tinted Moisturizer

You Should Be Wearing Sunscreen Every Day—And You’ll Actually *Want* To Use These (29)

Pros
  • You Should Be Wearing Sunscreen Every Day—And You’ll Actually *Want* To Use These (30)Blends seamlessly into skin and offers light coverage
  • You Should Be Wearing Sunscreen Every Day—And You’ll Actually *Want* To Use These (31)Works on many different skin tones
  • You Should Be Wearing Sunscreen Every Day—And You’ll Actually *Want* To Use These (32)Offers a dewy finish
Cons
  • You Should Be Wearing Sunscreen Every Day—And You’ll Actually *Want* To Use These (33)You may not use enough to get adequate SPF coverage
SPF35
Key IngredientsHyaluronic Acid
TypeMineral
Skin TypeAll

"This product provides both UV protection, cosmetic coverage with a variety of shades, and skin benefits with plumping hyaluronic acid and soothing licorice root extract," Dr. Zeichner explains. If you're looking for a bit of coverage and a dewy finish, this Saie Tinted Moisturizer is the one for you.

WH senior deputy digital editor, Maridel Reyes, likes how lightweight it is, too. She doesn't typically wear foundation, but appreciated that this gave her a "my skin but better" look—her only tip is to make sure not to wear this on top of another moisturizer, but to let it replace that step in your skincare routine."My complexion—normally slightly ruddy because of my sensitive skin—was evened out and pleasantly glow-y. (But not greasy.) I noticed during Zoom meetings that I looked more rested, even though Slip Tint was the only swipe of makeup I put on my face," says Reyes.

One important note: Wearing a tinted moisturizer with SPF is a great option, but just be mindful that you need to use at least a quarter-size amount to get the SPF number listed on the tube—and often people don't wear that much of a tinted formula, fearing too much product will alter their natural skin tone too much (a challenge, generally, with all tinted moisturizer/foundation hybrids).

Best For Oily Skin

Fenty Skin Hydra Vizor Invisible Face Moisturizer SPF 30

Pros
  • You Should Be Wearing Sunscreen Every Day—And You’ll Actually *Want* To Use These (35)Oil-free and lightweight so won't leave skin greasy
  • You Should Be Wearing Sunscreen Every Day—And You’ll Actually *Want* To Use These (36)Absorbs quickly into skin
  • You Should Be Wearing Sunscreen Every Day—And You’ll Actually *Want* To Use These (37)Hydrates and brightens with niacinamide
Cons
  • You Should Be Wearing Sunscreen Every Day—And You’ll Actually *Want* To Use These (38)May not be moisturizing enough for some
SPF30
Key IngredientsNiacinamide, Hyaluronic Acid, Aloe
TypeChemical
Skin TypeOily, Combination

This oil-free moisturizer blends in so fast you'll forget if you even applied it. The non-comedogenic formula has a matte finish that's perfect for daytime use. This product "protects the skin from UV light in a formula that also hydrates and brightens with a blend of niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, and botanicals," Dr. Zeichner notes.

"The consistency felt like a lightweight lotion that easily melts into the skin," says WH editorial assistant Sabrina Talbert. "One thing to note is that it tends to pill over time and the scent, while pleasant, is long-lasting and can be overbearing." Still, she adds that it never irritated her sensitive skin. The other major perk, you can separately purchase extra refills so that you don't have to toss the bottle once you're done with it—a win for sustainable shoppers.

Best For Combination Skin

Mary Kay Mineral Facial Sunscreen

You Should Be Wearing Sunscreen Every Day—And You’ll Actually *Want* To Use These (39)

Pros
  • You Should Be Wearing Sunscreen Every Day—And You’ll Actually *Want* To Use These (40)Completely non-comedogenic
  • You Should Be Wearing Sunscreen Every Day—And You’ll Actually *Want* To Use These (41)Absorbs quickly with a no-shine finish

Cons
  • You Should Be Wearing Sunscreen Every Day—And You’ll Actually *Want* To Use These (43)May leave a whitish cast on some skin tones
SPF30
Key IngredientsZinc Oxide
TypeMineral
Skin TypeCombination, Sensitive

Does your combination skin make shopping for skincare more difficult? If so, you'll fall in love with this SPF 30 lotion from Mary Kay. Whether you're exposed to UV rays from the sun or the damaging blue light that comes from your electronic devices, this gem has you covered. It's a bit thicker in texture (similar to a true sunscreen), but it still sits weightlessly on your skin.

"As someone with combination skin, it can be hard to find a product that leaves my skin feeling soft without making it oily or shiny, but this product does just that," says Talbert. "It gives just enough of a glow and keeps my skin supple for hours at a time." She calls out that there's a bit of a white cast, which is more noticeable in areas where she has hyperpigmentation. She also isn't a huge fan of the smell, as it's a bit stronger compared to the other formulas she's tried.

Best Clear Formula

Glossier Invisible Shield Priming SPF 50

Pros
  • You Should Be Wearing Sunscreen Every Day—And You’ll Actually *Want* To Use These (45)Clear finish that doubles as a primer
  • You Should Be Wearing Sunscreen Every Day—And You’ll Actually *Want* To Use These (46)Absorbs into skin quickly
  • You Should Be Wearing Sunscreen Every Day—And You’ll Actually *Want* To Use These (47)Lightweight and will not clog pores
Cons
  • You Should Be Wearing Sunscreen Every Day—And You’ll Actually *Want* To Use These (48)May not be hydrating enough for very dry skin or wintertime
SPF50
Key IngredientsAloe
TypeChemical
Skin TypeNormal, Combination, Oily

Clear SPFs are all the rage right now—and this sunscreen-meets-primer is the best of the bunch. Even if your skin starts looking greasy at the mere thought of applying sunscreen, this one is for you. Its gel formula absorbs fast and blends in without leaving behind any white cast or weighing your skin down. It's mattifying, which works well when priming for makeup if you have textured skin. It also contains soothing aloe leaf juice—a total win for those with sensitive skin as well.

"This reminds me a lot of the Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen, except it's more lightweight," says Talbert. "It has a silicone-like texture that wasn't too heavy on my combination skin." She adds that while this formula worked for her, she can see it being less hydrating for those with dry skin. She also isn't a huge fan of the scent even though it's not overwhelming.

Best For Sensitive Skin

Dermalogica Prisma Protect SPF 30 Moisturizer

Pros
  • You Should Be Wearing Sunscreen Every Day—And You’ll Actually *Want* To Use These (50)Advanced technology activated by the sun

If you love the sun but love your skin more, give this high-tech moisturizer a try. The light activates the moisturizer to engage the intelligent drone technology in the formula to give your skin a subtle glow. You’ll also find sage in the formula that evens and smoothes the skin. "This broad spectrum sunscreen delivers matcha extract, a potent form of green tea with antioxidant effects to protect against free radical damage," Dr. Zeicher adds. Green tea has also been known to soothe skin and reduce inflammation, which can prevent irritation for those with sensitive skin.

WH assistant love and life editor, Addison Aloian, is a huge fan, too—even though she has super sensitive, acne-prone skin. "It felt great on my face. It was really easy to apply and had no fragrance, which I really liked. I have super sensitive skin, and it didn't get irritated, which was amazing!"

Cons
  • You Should Be Wearing Sunscreen Every Day—And You’ll Actually *Want* To Use These (57)May be too dewy for some
SPF46
Key IngredientsNiacinamide
TypeMineral
Skin TypeAll

This oil-free sunscreen is made with niacinamide to treat blemishes and discoloration. The zinc oxide also prevents aging side effects from UVA rays in addition to burning. Meanwhile, Vitamin E neutralizes free radical damage. Side note: this formula is not water-resistant, so if you plan on hitting the pool or beach, make sure to bring an additional sunscreen with you.

"I haven’t always been a tinted moisturizer girl, but this product definitely surprised me," says WH senior beauty Danielle Jackson. "It looks so much like a foundation or complexion product when you initially pump it out of the bottle, but once you apply it, it goes on so smoothly like your average moisturizer." She adds that a product like this can come in handy when it's too hot outside to wear heavy makeup. She also calls out that it only comes in two shades and might not be the best replacement for people who prefer high coverage makeup.

Best For Those With Dark Spots

Lion Pose Ghost-Buster 100% Mineral Sunscreen SPF 42

Pros
  • You Should Be Wearing Sunscreen Every Day—And You’ll Actually *Want* To Use These (59)Contains ingredients that help to even skin tone
  • You Should Be Wearing Sunscreen Every Day—And You’ll Actually *Want* To Use These (60)Tinted formula won't leave a white cast

Cons
  • You Should Be Wearing Sunscreen Every Day—And You’ll Actually *Want* To Use These (62)Takes some time to blend in
SPF42
Key IngredientsSqualane
TypeMineral
Skin TypeAll

Formulated for all skin tones, this mineral-based tinted moisturizer leaves a bit of a white cast at first, but that goes away once it's completely blended out. The non-nano zinc oxide makes it reef safe while other ingredients such as squalane and glutathione keep skin hydrated and protected from free radical damage.

Loved by several people on Team WH staffers—it was even a winner of the 2024 Women's Health beauty awards—Talbert is a huge fan. "I'm obsessed with how light this formula feels on my skin," she says. "It works best for me during warmer months when I tend to get oily and want something that won't clog my pores." She adds that it has a fresh cucumber-like smell that is subtle enough to not irritate her skin. She also appreciates that it evens out her tone despite it taking a bit more effort to blend in compared to some other SPF moisturizers she's tried.

The tinted sunscreen multitasks by adding protection against harmful rays and color-correcting hyperpigmentation. "It invisibly blends into the skin with a light tint to even skin tone," Dr. Zeichner says. "Shea butter, Vitamin E, and coconut oil hydrate, soften and protect the skin barrier."

Sometimes you need a moisturizer that will give your skin an extra glow. If you can relate, you'll love this UV Serum from Kiehl's. It contains collagen peptide, which corrects early signs of aging caused by UV damage. The formula also works to improve skin tone and texture for a more even, radiant complexion.

"As someone with sensitive skin, I was concerned that using a chemical formula would cause irritation," says Talbert. "Instead, it soothed my skin and left me with a subtle glow." For some, that glow could translate to a shiny finish, so this may not be for you if your skin tends toward oily or combination. Talbert also wishes the bottle was slightly bigger given the price. Still, she notes that a little bit of product goes a long way.

Best For Dry Skin

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Moisturizing Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50

You Should Be Wearing Sunscreen Every Day—And You’ll Actually *Want* To Use These (68)

Pros

Hate the feeling of thick, greasy sunscreen? Meet the complete opposite. This gel sunscreen hydrates (thanks to hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and vitamin E) and protects (thanks to a combo of proven chemical sunscreen ingredients) all while feeling like nothing on your skin. "Hyaluronic acid acts like a sponge to pull in hydration and moisturize the outer skin layer," Dr. Zeichner explains.

"It's so incredibly lightweight but still makes me feel super protected and moisturized for the day ahead," says WH features editor Currie Engle. "I'll usually put it on in the morning after I wash my face—It smells really fresh and lovely, too!" While she's always been a big fan of Neutrogena products, she notes that this one definitely hits the mark.

The one criticism is the odor, which can be off-putting to some who don't like a strong "sunscreen" smell.

SPF45
Key IngredientsOil-trapping microspheres and avocado and African yellow wood bark extracts
TypeChemical
Skin TypeNormal, dry, combination, and oily

Ever feel like your sunscreen is leaving your skin looking like an oil slick? Meet your new SPF BFF. WH lifestyle director Lindsay Geller is totally hooked on the product. "I love that this offers quality sun protection with a lightweight, non-greasy, feel and mattifying look," she says. "I usually look super shiny after putting on sunscreen, but this actually improves the texture of my skin—it instantly feels smoother." She adds that she doesn't need to wear makeup with this moisturizer, but when she does, it goes on seamlessly with zero creases or flakes.

Not only does it protect your skin from UVA (what causes aging) and UVB (what causes your skin to burn) rays, it also claims to minimize pores by 54 percent and keeps your skin matte for up to 10 hours. That's because it "contains mattifying ingredients to reduce shine along with willowbark to balance oil production," Dr. Zeichner says. Its oil-trapping microspheres work wonders to also smooth and blur blemishes. Bonus: it can be used as a makeup primer, too, making it a true triple threat.

You Should Be Wearing Sunscreen Every Day—And You’ll Actually *Want* To Use These (79)

What is the difference between a moisturizer with SPF and a regular sunscreen ?

While moisturizers with SPF and standard sunscreens provide protection from the sun, there are still some differences. "Moisturizers with SPF are inherently different in that they provide moisturizing effects, as well as other added benefits beyond sun protection," says Dr. Zeichner. Additionally, there are also some moisturizers that don't have enough SPF to replace your sunscreen. That said, if you want a product that can do both effectively, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends using an SPF 30 or higher.
