Contribution of Stress to Construction Site Accidents, Dangerous Occurrences and Near Misses

One of the noted denouements of stress is the causation of accidents, dangerous occurrences and near misses. In construction, stress has been noted to be on the rise due to several antecedents such as; ambitious deadlines, workload, role conflict, poor communication, and dangerous working environments. This study therefore sought to empirically establish the contribution of organizational stressors, job- related stressors and work environment stressors to the occurrence of construction site accidents, dangerous occurrences and near misses. Data for the study was obtained from a questionnaire survey of 204 construction site workers in Ghana. Structural Equation Modelling was the foremost technique employed in analysing data from the survey. Data on construction related stressors showed ambitious deadlines, low salary and working in dangerous environment to be the stressors causing the most stress on construction workers in Ghana. The overall contribution of stressors to accident occurrence, dangerous occurrences and near misses achieved was 0.968 (96.8%) which denotes a very high contribution. The study provides a valuable insight into the failings of construction site safety measures. It empirically points to the soft side of the problem and points to the need for greater collaboration between health and safety officers and project managers.

The Impact of Integrating Occupational Safety and Health into the Pre-Construction Phase of Projects: A Literature Review

Construction is a high-risk industry owning to several accidents that take place in construction sites. Fatalities and workplace injuries are a major issue. Construction managers concentrate on profitability as far as cost, quality, and time are concerned. Unless experts end up mindful of safety-related issues, development tasks can never reach their targets. The main aim of this paper is to review the literature that highlights the result of the implementation of occupational health and safety practices in construction sites. The research examines the impact of the implementation on the number of accidents in construction sites and the precautions that should be taken into consideration starting from the pre-construction stage. Previous research suggested that early introduction of occupational safety & health management systems (OHSMS) and elements within the project implementation is an important asset in decision-making. It aims toward the abatement of occupational hazards in the workplace. The paper explores through a literature review the root causes of construction accidents and factors causing risks in construction sites. The research explains OSHMS, and its effects, and how they can be integrated into the pre-construction stage in projects. The impact of the implementation of occupational health and safety practices at construction sites will be discussed as well. The study concluded that due to implementing OHSMS, there is a significant reduction in accidents. In order to improve security and health, safety measures should be included starting from the preparation of contract documents. It is recommended that the managers of top construction companies commit more to safety and health procedures. There is a need to provide funding for the regulatory body that oversees health and safety in the construction industry.

The construction industry is a key contributor of economic growth in all countries of the world. Due to their labor intensive nature, construction works provide employment opportunities for many skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled people. However; construction works are considered as risky since frequent and high occupational accident rates and health problems occur with workers. In Ethiopia also, the construction industry has been hazardeous sector causing a number of work place accidents, injuries and fatalities. There are several factors contributing to the occurence of frequent occupational accidents. The occupational safety and health management system of the country is poor because of diffirent constraints. Hence, identification and analysis of the factors causing construction workplace accidents and constraints in the occupational safety and health management system is vital for the effectiveness of creating safe working environment in Ethiopian construction sector in general and in building construction projects in particular. The aim of this study is to evaluate the performance of occupational safety and health management in building construction sites of Bahir Dar. Accordingly, it attempts to identify the extent and cause of occupational accidents, injuries and fatalities and the constraints in the management of occupational safety and health in building construction sites. The study results revealed that out of total participants 41% of the workers experienced occupational injuries and 30% had experienced occupational illnesses. The results also showed that fall from height is the leading cause of occupational accidents and back pain is the leading occupational illness in building construction sites. Lack of safety and health policy, lack of personal protective equipment, inadequate safety and health training, lack of safety and health professionals and poor risk assessments respectively are the top constraints in the management of occupational safety and health in building construction sites.
